Diabetes Treatment

A necessary treatment for all types of diabetes aimed at achieving different objectives, must be based on three key interrelated aspects: food, exercise and medication.

After the specific analyses that will determine the existence of the disease, it is necessary to begin a treatment that will have as primary objectives:

  • Normalize glucose levels in blood, with the help of an adequate intake of food, physical activity and if necessary, the use of medication (insulin or oral hypoglycemic)
  • Improving the overall health and lifestyle.
  • Correcting the metabolic abnormalities (increase of lipids in the blood) and symptoms that appear.
  • Preventing acute complications (hypoglycemia and cetoacidosis)
  • Delay the onset of chronic complications.

To achieve these objectives, the following resources are available:

  • Adequate food plan depending on the type of diabetes.
  • Physical activity.
  • Medication: insulin or oral hypoglycemic.
  • Diabetes education.

Both the proper nutrition and physical activity, and educating the diabetic and his family are necessary for all patients. However, regarding medication, it’s according to the type of diabetes that a person is suffering from and must be indicated by the doctor according to each particular case.
