Diabetes Diets

There is no one single “right” diet for the diabetic, but if you have diabetes, the way you eat is absolutely crucial to maintaining your health and leading a long and fulfilling life. A good diet for a diabetic should do three things: help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight, maintain normal blood glucose levels, and prevent heart and blood vessel diseases.

In general, good diets for diabetics follow some basic guidelines. You should eat several small meals throughout the course of the day, rather than just one or two heavy meals. This will help you maintain an even blood sugar level and avoid extremely high or extremely low blood sugar levels during the day. Strict diets to lose weight while you are diabetic is not a good idea, and you should consult your doctor. If you do need to lose weight, it is usually best to go about it slowly and gradually, like one or two pounds a week. You should also avoid excess amounts of carbohydrates, as they will make your sugar spike.

When you are diagnosed with diabetes, whether it is Type 1 or Type 2, your doctor or health care provider will most often prescribe a diet as part of your diabetes treatment. Then by consulting a nutritionist or a dietitian, you can develop a diet plan that is both interesting to you (if it is not boring, you will be much more likely to stick to it) and easy for you to maintain. Other great places to look for help in developing diabetes diets are local diabetes centers at large medical facilities, clinics, hospitals or medical universities. You can also check out the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association or the American Dietetic Association to get names of qualified nutritionists and dietitians, as well as information about diet and meal planning.
