Diabetes and Diet

For those of us that suffer from diabetes, we know that diet is a very important part of keeping our disease under control. While there is no specific “diabetes diet” that you can go on and instantly have everything under control, there are many foods that both help and hinder the diabetic body. Fortunately, the foods that are good for diabetes sufferers are good for everyone in general and great to incorporate into anyone’s diet.

This is good news because diabetics with families will not feel like they are left out and having to eat something no one else has to eat – the whole family can eat healthily together at mealtime. One of the only differences, however, is that as a diabetic, you will need to keep a closer eye on your carbohydrate intake than the rest of your family members that do not have diabetes will have to. Carbohydrates have the most significant impact on blood sugar levels and you need to monitor their consumption closely to avoid any pitfalls.

To keep your blood sugar levels in check, as a diabetic, you have got to make healthy food choices, along with incorporating regular exercise into your lifestyle and taking the medicines that your doctor or health care provider prescribe for you. Talk to your doctor or track down a registered dietitian to discuss what foods will work best for you.

Fruits, vegetables, grains and cereals are all important foods to eat, as are foods that are high in fiber. Studies have shown that people that consume a diet high in fiber improve their blood sugar and cholesterol levels when they have Type 2 diabetes. And like carbohydrates, too much alcohol can have adverse effects on your blood sugar levels, so consume that in moderation, too.
